Global Range: (20,000-200,000 square km (about 8000-80,000 square miles)) It is found in the tributaries of the Satilla River, Georgia, and southward through peninsular Florida (Hobbs, 1942) extending onto some of the keys.

Comments: It is a very variable species in its habitat and is considered to be a habitat generalist, inhabiting both lentic and lotic situations It is found in lentic such as ditches, and lotic situations and burrows (Hobbs 1942). Hobbs (1942) indicates that this species has a very variable habitat range, and will occur in any freshwater habitat providing there is sufficient vegetation to provide protection from predators.
Non-Migrant: No. All populations of this species make significant seasonal migrations.
Locally Migrant: No. No populations of this species make local extended movements (generally less than 200 km) at particular times of the year (e.g., to breeding or wintering grounds, to hibernation sites).

10,000 to >1,000,000 individuals
Comments: Hobbs (1942) recorded 1844 specimens and stated that it is one of the most common species in the north-central part of the Florida peninsular.
