Anual culm tufted, erect, the base geniculate or ascending, 3-6-noded; ligule membranous 1-2 mm long, fringed with cilia. Inflorescence a panicle , 10-20 cm long, spikelets racemosely arranged on one side of the primary branches. Spikelets (2-)3-7-flowered, about 2.5 mm long, often purplish; glumes membranous pointed, minute, subequal, 1-nerved; lower glume about 0.8 mm long; upper glume longer, about 1 mm long; lemmas keeled, obtuse, glabrous or somewhat pubescent, 3-nerved; the lowest lemma about 1.5 mm long; palea minute, membranous 2-keeled, apex blunt, about 0.8 mm long; anthers 3, about 0.2 mm long. Caryopsis globose, about 1 mm long.

Annual or sometimes perennial. Culms erect, geniculate or decumbent and rooting from nodes, 30–100 cm tall, smooth and glabrous. Leaf sheaths glabrous; leaf blades flat or slightly involute, 5–25 × 0.2–0.9 cm, glabrous, scabrid on both surfaces or abaxial surface smooth, apex acuminate; ligule membranous, 1–5 mm. Inflorescence 10–50 cm; racemes numerous, unilateral, to 10 cm, slender, flexuose, laxly ascending, rachis scabrid, spikelets usually imbricate. Spikelets purplish or brownish green, narrowly elliptic-oblong, laterally compressed, 2–4 mm, florets 3–7; glumes scabrid along keels and sometimes laterally; lower glume lanceolate, 1–1.5 mm, acute; upper glume elliptic-oblong, 1.2–2 mm, obtuse; lemmas elliptic-oblong, keeled, lowest ca. 1.5 mm, shortly appressed-hairy along lower margins and on either side of midvein, obtuse or minutely emarginate; palea minutely hispid on keels, appressed hairy on back and flaps. Anthers ca. 0.5 mm. Caryopsis oblong, 0.7–0.9 mm, plano-convex. Fl. and fr. Aug–Oct. 2n = 40.

"Culms tufted, erect or ascending, to 75 cm; nodes glabrous. Leafblades flat or involute, 8-24 x 0.2-0.6 cm, glabrous; ligule membranous, lacerate at apex, to 0.2 cm. Panicles to 30 cm; branches numerous, linear, erect or spreading, to 18 cm. Spikelets linear-oblong, to 0.3 cm, 3-7-flowered; pedicel to 0.1 cm, scaberulous. Glumes ovate-lanceolate, membranous, subequal, 1-veined; lower glume to 0.08 cm; upper glume to 0.12 cm; lemmas elliptic-lanceolate, keeled, 3-veined, sparsely pilose on marginal veins; lower lemma to 0.15 cm; palea ovate, to 0.08 cm, membranous, 2-keeld. Grain broadly obovoid, to 0.1 cm."
