This species is native to North Africa, south throughout most of sub-Saharan Africa to South Africa, east through the Arabian Peninsula and the Indian sub-continent and Myanmar, as well as some Atlantic and Indian Ocean island groups. It is considered introduced to the north coast and islands of the Mediterranean, Australasia, many Pacific Ocean island groups and North and Central America (Board of Trustees of the Royal Botanic Garden, Kew 2012).
