Perennial herb with (in ours) ± prostrate stems rooting at the nodes. Leaves opposite, entire, toothed or (usually) lobed. Phyllaries in 2-3 rows. Capitula radiate, solitary on long peduncles; ray florets female, fertile; rays yellow to orange-yellow; disk florets bisexual, yellow to orange-yellow. Receptacle bearing scales. Achenes irregularly tuberculate, minutely hairy in upper part, with 1-2 caducous aristae. Pappus cup-shaped with 1-2 awns or none.

Sphagneticola
Hierbas decumbentes a veces escandentes. Tallos con raíces adventicias en los nudos. Hojas opuestas, pecioladas; láminas simples y aserradas. Capítulos heterógamos, radiados, con numerosas flores, pedunculados, solitarios o agregados en una inflorescencia secundaria terminal; filarios en 2-3 series, foliáceos; receptáculo paleáceo. Flores del disco bisexuales, sostenidas por una pálea; corolas amarillas o anaranjadas, actinomorfas, tubulares, 5-lobadas; estambres 5, las anteras negras, connatas; ovario ínfero, el estilo filiforme, con 2 ramas estigmáticas papiloso-hírtulas. Flores del margen pistiladas; corolas zigomorfas, liguladas, amarillas o anaranjadas. Fruto un aquenio tuberculado, negro; pappus formando una “corona” fimbriada, diminuta. Género con 4 especies, 3 de las cuales son nativas del Nuevo Mundo.

Capitula heterogamous, radiate, with numerous flowers, pedunculate, solitary or clustered in a secondary terminal inflorescence; phyllaries in 2-3 series, foliaceous; receptacle paleaceous. Disc flowers bisexual, subtended by a palea; corollas yellow or orange, actinomorphic, tubular, 5-lobed; stamens 5, the anthers black, connate; ovary inferior, the style filiform, with 2 papillosehirtellous stigmatic branches. Ray flowers pistillate; corollas zygomorphic, ligulate, yellow or orange. Fruit a tuberculate achene, black; pappus forming a fimbriate “corona,” minute. A genus of 4 species, 3 of them native to the New World.
