Degree of Threat: Unknown
Comments: In California, some sites where this species occurs are inaccessible, to some extent limiting impacts from human activities. However, some colonies are threatened by military activities. Also, because the species has a fairly local distribution, a few solar projects planned without taking the species into account could seriously impact it in Imperial County (S. Ingram pers. comm. 2009). Threats in Baja California unknown.

Biological Research Needs: Taxonomy is confusing. Recent studies put this in Cylindropuntia and consider a hybrid (Cylindropuntia x munzii). This needs more study.
