"Erect, tufted, non-rhizomatous annual herbs; roots reddish, culms 20-48 cm tall, acutery triquetrous with concave sides. Leaves few, basal, 9-30 x 0.3-0.5 cm, linear-acute, flat; sheaths 2-6 cm long, brown. Inflorescence compound, 3-6 cm across, branches ending in congested globose clusters of spikelets; leafy bracts 2-3; the lowest upto 20 cm long. Spikelets 2-5 x c. 1 mm, linear, obtuse. Glumes c. 0.7 x 1 mm, orbicular, apex rounded or emarginate, margins broadly white-hyaline, keel yellowish. Stamens 1-2. Stigmas 3. Nut c. 0.5 mm long, elliptic, trigonous, apiculate, pale brown."

"Habitat and Ecology: The plant normally grows in flooded or in very moist soils. It is frequently found in small pools, along rivers, canals, and streams, in open wet places, and in grassy swamps.
