‘iRecord Ladybirds’ is a free mobile phone app to help monitor the impact of the invasive Harlequin ladybird on the UK’s native ladybird species.
The app will enable people to contribute more easily to the UK Ladybird Survey whose results have already shown declines in native species such as the 2-spot ladybird in response to the arrival of the harlequin ladybird, first recorded in England in 2003.
NatureWatch allows citizen scientists to identify and report invasive alien species by (1) using the iPhone application to submit reports via photos and videos of species, droppings or footprints as well as through sound bites and text; (2) Sign up to existing communities or create their own; (3) Getting more information about invasive alien species and learning more by playing a recognition game.
CDFA is making a new mobile app available for Californians interested in helping to keep an eye out for invasive species. The app is called “Report a Pest,” and it enables people to take photos of a suspected invasive insect or plant and send them to CDFA for evaluation. The app includes an option for GPS coordinates of the find, just in case a rapid response is necessary.
PlantTracker is a MOBILE PHONE APP designed for invasive plants in the UK. It is available free from the iTunes App Store and Android Market, and shows you how to identify each species and enables you to easily submit geo-located photos whenever you find one. The app now features 14 invasive plant species and also includes a "Confusion Species" gallery for each one, to help you separate some of the similar looking plants you might encounter.
ispot is a public site for sharing information and developing identifications. It includes many images, and also interactive keys, some of which can be downloaded for use on a mobile phone. It is developed for use primarily in the UK, but might be a model for wider use.
