Abstract:

Competition between the invasive species Bidens frondosa and the native Bidens tripartita was experimentally investigated at different plant densities as well as different moisture and nutrient conditions. Three garden or greenhouse experiments were conducted. B. frondosa exhibited competitive superiority over B. tripartita and the superiority was usually more pronounced under less fertile and dry conditions. Intraspecific competition was more intensive than interspecific in B. frondosa and vice versa in B. tripartita. The experimental results are in accordance with field observations when B. tripartita is often competitively excluded by B. frondosa in central European landscapes.
