Perennial tendril climber. Leaves with somewhat hairy, 1-1.7 cm long, filiform petiole bearing 2 opposite or alternate stipitate glands, located c. 2-3 mm below lamina; lamina elliptic-ovate or oval, 6-7.5 cm long, 4.5-5.5 cm broad, entire or 3-lobed, glabrous, obtuse or acute, mucronate; stipules setaceous, c. 5-6 mm long. Flowers solitary axillary, on drooping, filiform, 1-1.5 cm long peduncles, pale-green, c. 1 cm across; pedicel 3-4 mm long; hypanthium saucer shaped. Sepals 5, oblong-lanceolate, 5-6 mm long, 2.5-3 mm wide, somewhat hooded, obtuse, pale-green. Petals absent. Corona 4-seriate, filaments shorter than sepals, pale green and purple. Stamens 5, filaments 2.5-3 mm long; anthers c. 2 mm long. Ovary subglobose, c. 2 mm long; styles clavate, each c. 3 mm long. Berry pulpy, globose c. 1 cm in diameter, purplish.

Herbaceous vines, 1-4(-10) m long. Stem white or whitish gray, triangular, slender, striate. Petiole 2-4 cm, white strigose, with 2 glands at middle or slightly above; leaf blade 5-5.5(-8) × 5-6(-11) cm, abaxially gray-green, sparsely villous, base cordate, 3-lobed, lobes ovate, apex acute, mucronate. Flowers axillary, solitary or in pairs, light green or white, 1.5-2.5 cm in diam. Sepals 5-8 mm, oblong or lanceolate, outside hispidulous. Petals absent. Corona in 2 series, filamentous, outer series 3-7 mm, inner series ca. 1 mm; operculum plicate, 1-2 mm high; disk 0.5-1 mm; androgynophore 2-4 mm tall. Filaments flat, 1.5-4 mm, free; anthers oblong, 2-3 mm. Ovary subglobose, glabrous; styles 3, almost threadlike, 7-8 mm; stigma capitate. Berry turning bluish black at maturity, subglobose, 1-1.2 cm in diam. Fl. Aug-Sep, fr. Sep-Nov. 2n = 24.

Bejuco herbáceo que trepa mediante zarcillos y alcanza 1-3 m de largo. Tallos delgados, cilíndricos, pubescentes o glabros, usualmente con matiz rojizo; tallos maduros con 4 proyecciones longitudinales suberosas. Hojas alternas; láminas 4-15 × 4-10 cm, trilobadas, lanceoladas, ovadas, lineares o elípticas, cartáceas, con 3 o 5 nervios principales que nacen desde la base, los lóbulos más o menos profundos, oblongos, ovados a sub-lineares, el 1óbulo central más largo que los laterales, el ápice obtuso o agudo, la base cordiforme, redondeada u obtusa, a veces peltada, los márgenes levemente revolutos, ciliados; haz lustroso, glabro o puberulento; envés glabro o pubescente, con la nervación poco prominente; pecíolos 15-20 mm de largo, glabros o pubescentes, sulcados, rojizos, con un par de glándulas diminutas más arriba de la mitad; estípulas filiformes, ca. 5 mm; zarcillos axilares, simples, glabros. Flores erectas, solitarias o en pares, axilares; pedicelos articulados, 15-20 mm de largo; brácteas ausentes. Sépalos 5, verdes en la superficie externa, blancuzcos o verde claro en la superficie interna, lanceolados, 8-13 mm de largo; pétalos ausentes; corona biseriada, los apéndices morados, más cortos que los sépalos; ginóforo cilíndrico, verde, ca. 5 mm de largo; estambres 5, verdes, ascendentes; ovario elipsoide, verde, los estilos reflexos, los estigmas capitados. Non-woody vine that climbs by means of tendrils and attains 1-3 m in length. Stems slender, cylindrical, pubescent or glabrous, usually with a reddish tinge; mature stems with 4 longitudinal wings, of cork or corky material. Leaves alternate, chartaceous, glabrous, 4-15 × 4-10 cm, extremely variable in form, trilobate, lanceolate, ovate, linear, or elliptical, with 3 or 5 main veins that are borne from the base, the lobes more or less deep, oblong, ovate to almost linear, the central lobe longer than the lateral ones, the apex obtuse or acute, the base cordiform, rounded, or obtuse, sometimes peltate, the margins slightly revolute, ciliate; upper surface shiny, glabrous or puberulent; lower surface glabrous or pubescent, with slightly prominent venation; petioles 15-20 mm long, glabrous or pubescent, sulcate, reddish, with a pair of minute glands above the middle; tendrils axillary, simple, glabrous; stipules filiform, ca. 5 mm. Flowers erect, solitary or in pairs, axillary; pedicels articulate, 15-20 mm long; bracts absent. Sepals 5, lanceolate, 8-13 mm long, green outside, whitish or light green on the inner surface; petals absent; corona biseriate, the segments mulberry-colored, shorter than the sepals; gynophore cylindrical, ca. 5 mm long; stamens 5, green, ascendent; ovary ellipsoid, green, the styles reflexed, the stigmas capitate. Fruit an ovoid or ellipsoid berry, 10-12 mm long, dark violet when ripe. Seeds numerous, ellipsoid, ca. 3 mm long, covered by a green pulp.
Phenology: Flowering and fruiting throughout the year.
Status: Native, very common.
