(También es cultivado por América tropical y subtropical hasta el sur de los Estados Unidos, Las Antilla, y en el Viejo Mundo.) Es un árbol común de la Región Oriental. Abunda en el estrato intermedio del bosque alto, especialmente en sitios húmedos.

Whole plant: Aromatic. Leaf: Decoction or infusion used to remedy head colds, influenza, chest colds, cough, fever and as a bitter tonic. Infusion drunk shortly before childbirth in Surinam. Fruit: Acidic, refreshant. In a syrup for influenza.

Comments: La madera es dura y pesada. Se usa para leña y carbón. Los frutos son comestibles, se dicen que tienen propiedades laxantes, las hojas se usan para preparar gargarismos contra afecciones de la garganta, en Brasil las usan como t de pita. Arbol muy usado por sus frutos y flores, como ornamental, y para setos atractivos.
