Description | Pua kala, Pōkalakala, or Hawaiian prickly poppy Papaveraceae Endemic to the Hawaiian Islands Locally common to uncommon North Kona, Hawaiʻi Island Native pua kala, ʻilima (Sida fallax) emerging after a fire swept the area. But sadly, several mature ʻōhiʻa (Metrosideros polymorpha) and lama (Diospyros sandwicensis) were destroyed in the process. Even with the toxic background, the early Hawaiians used the bright yellow sap (latex) and seeds medicinally for toothache pain, neuralgia (nerve pain), and ulcers. The sap only was used for warts. nativeplants.hawaii.edu/plant/view/Argemone_glauca |
